WHAT IS ZAP DAY?
Fifty years ago in 1972, David Rosser organized OPERATION ZAP, an extensive cleanup of the Blackstone River in Rhode Island.
ZAP stands for “ZERO AWAY POLLUTION”
His goal was for the Blackstone River to be sufficiently clean and safe for boating, swimming and fishing. From all his valiant efforts, he organized 10,000 individual volunteers and removed 10,000 tons of waste and refuse as well as over 20,000 trash bags from the river.
Volunteers provided not only labor, but a significant amount of donated equipment including cranes, bulldozers, dump trucks, flat beds, tow trucks, mowers, canoes, boats, chainsaws, SCUBA divers.
